Up here in the Sierra Foothills, we’re not messing around. Our vineyards climb from 1,200 to 3,500 feet, juggling hundreds of microclimates that crank out nearly 50 grape varieties. El Dorado winemakers—like us at Holly’s Hill Vineyards—live for this wild terrain, experimenting with passion and a fierce love for this place. That’s the El Dorado edge.
Mountain-Grown Magic
What’s the secret behind El Dorado wines’ big flavors and deep hues? It’s the mountains, plain and simple. Steep hillsides soak up warm summer days, then chill under cool night air—a combo that pumps out lush fruit, killer balance, bright acidity and gentle tannins. These mountain-grown wines have a body and depth that flatland valleys can only dream of. Taste one, and you’ll get it.
A Gold Rush Reborn in Grapes
El Dorado’s story kicks off in 1848 with James Marshall striking gold at Sutter’s Mill in Coloma—California’s Gold Rush ground zero. As fortune-hunters swarmed in, wineries sprang up to keep them buzzed. By 1870, El Dorado County was a wine powerhouse, trailing only LA and Sonoma with 2,000 acres of vines. Then came the crash—bad economics, shrinking towns, and Prohibition’s final kick. By the 1920s, the vines were ghosts.
Cue the comeback. In the late ‘60s, experimental vineyards proved this dirt and climate were gold for premium table wines. Boeger Winery fired up in 1973, and El Dorado was back in the game. Today, we’re rocking over 2,000 acres, 50+ wineries, and an American Viticultural Area (AVA) stamp from 1983. Sophisticated? You bet—Sierra Foothills wine doesn’t play small.
Holly’s Hill Steps Up
We threw our hat in the ring in 1999, planting our first grapes at Holly’s Hill. By 2001, our tasting room was rolling—back when El Dorado had under 20 wineries. Now? Over 70 dot the map, sprawled across steep slopes and towering pines in four killer zones. Gold Hill hugs the American River up north. Apple Hill, near Placerville, packs wineries and tasting rooms tight. Pleasant Valley—our home south of town—boasts epic views and a southern slope where our estate vines thrive. Down in Fairplay, another cluster of vineyards waits. You can hopscotch the regions in a day or zero in on one—your call.
At Holly’s Hill, we’re hooked on the rugged vibes, high altitudes, and the thrill of pushing boundaries. It’s not just about the wine—it’s the adventure, the jaw-dropping landscape, and the grins on visitors’ faces when they taste what El Dorado wineries deliver. Swing by El Dorado wine country and see why we’re a cut above. Holly’s Hill’s waiting.
Cheers,
Josh
